They are smaller

The first difference is visual and very easy to identify. While these discs still draw attention for their aesthetics, with curious shapes and eye-catching perforations, their size is considerably smaller than those intended for the road. Additionally, they have a slightly lower weight than their asphalt siblings, all to adapt, as we mentioned, to the particular needs of this type of motorcycle.

Braking is smoother

A particular feature of the braking system in general for off-road bikes is that a less abrupt response is required. The reason is simple. When we drive on a surface like asphalt, we have quite significant grip. However, when riding on sandy or muddy terrain, a large part of that grip is lost. Therefore, it is necessary for the braking to be smoother, so that wheel lock-up—which could lead to a fall—does not occur.

They suffer less overheating

As we have mentioned on numerous occasions, temperature is one of the most critical aspects of brake discs. Especially on asphalt and in high-level competition, when very high performance is demanded of them. However, since off-road braking must be smoother, the discs do not get as hot and, therefore, do not run the risk of suffering deformations due to temperature peaks.

They can suffer other types of damage

Despite this, off-road motorcycle brake discs, due to the very dynamics of the discipline, are exposed to all kinds of impacts and can be damaged by small stones or gravel that may fly up during riding. For this reason, these discs are generally protected with specific parts, manufactured to withstand these conditions.
